Elgin is located in the southwest part of Antelope County, which is in the northeast part of Nebraska. The world famous Nebraska Sandhills" start just a few miles to the west of Elgin. The primary industry of the area is agriculture with a scattering of commercial businesses.

Antelope County has a unique places to visit - including Ashfalls Fossil Beds, Grove Lake, Neligh Mills, Royal Zoo, and the Cowboy Trail. The southern half of the county is blessed with good underground water provided by the Ogallala Aquifier.
